You should watch a Bollywood movie. I'm serious. Or maybe you’ve been really wanting to watch a Bollywood movie but don’t know where to start. Have no fear, I have suggestions. I’m including the movie poster and a song from the movie (not ALL Bollywood movies have songs, contrary to popular belief, but 98 percent of them do). If you’re completely unfamiliar with Hindi films these are good places to start. In no particular order:
3 Idiots
Okay, I said no particular order but this does happen to be my favorite. Aamir Khan is synonymous with great movies. This is one of his best.
Wake Up Sid (netflix streaming)
Good movie and I love Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma. It’s about a guy who needs some direction in his life and a girl who knows what she wants.
Dehli Belly (netflix streaming)
Another Aamir Khan production so you know it’s going to be well made but unlike his other productions it’s not exactly family friendly. It is hilarious though. My husband even went to see it with me in an actual Bollywood Theater and he loves it. If you liked The Hangover you’ll like this movie, just make sure the kids are in bed.
Band Baaja Baraat
Anoushka Sharma is beautiful (as always) and she’s starting her own wedding planning business. Her partner is a guy who needs a break. Romantic complications ensue.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
3 best friends finally go on a road trip through Spain that they’ve been planning for years. It’s funny, beautiful, and exhilarating and will make you want to ditch work and hit the road. (Random Sidenote: Why does Hrithik always have to have his shirt off in the promotional posters? He’s not just a body but a great actor, give him some credit advertising team!)
Aaja Nachle
Madhuri Dixit is the woman Raj (from Big Bang) once called a leprous prostitute. I have to agree with Sheldon on this one, Raj obviously doesn’t know much about Indian cinema. This is not one of her classic films but she is still as gorgeous as ever and it’s a good story.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
I showed this movie to a friend and immediately afterward she got on Amazon and bought it. If you’re having a bad day this is the film for you. You’ll fall in love with Surinder’s nerdness and feel happy again, I promise.
There are many more I could recommend and so many stars you won’t get to meet in these films but it’s a good starting point. I love Bollywood and I am not ashamed.
